"A new age of heroines"

Service to others is in Marymount’s DNA. Kingdom Fair is the culminating event that celebrates this commitment to service and community outreach. Each year, all members of the junior class volunteer at service organizations around Los Angeles and share their experiences at this annual assembly.

On April 9th. Head of School Jacqueline Landry opened this year’s Kingdom Fair with a reminder to the community that, “we are only as happy and fulfilled as the least among us. This work that you do helps to lift up so many who are in need.”

Sister Catherine Mary Minhoto, RSHM, was the event’s keynote speaker.  Sr. Catherine observed that teenage girls are saving the world, pointing to Malala Yousafzai and Jersey Vargas as real-life examples of the Catniss Everdeens and Tris Priors of the literary world.   “You are among these young women,” Sr. Catherine noted. “You are using your compassion, creativity, intelligence, strength, and courage to start saving the world right now; that is evident in these projects.”

I see you as the legacy of the RSHM… you as confident girls, you as ethical leaders, you as global advocates, you are the new age of heroines, you are the new Catniss, Beatrice, Malala, Jersey, you must be a voice and advocate for all girls around the world…extend your hands to one another, start saving the world right now, become the new age of heroes or sheroes.”
