Internship Program Spotlight: Adventures of the Mind

Program participants:

Valory Banashek ’17, Julia Fong ’16, Lucia Kim ’16, Talia Pacini ’15, and Sage Strieker ’17

Considered to be the ‘TED for Teens,'  Adventures of the Mind (AOTM) is an annual achievement mentoring summit that provides promising teens with the invaluable opportunity to meet with accomplished professionals as well as like-minded peers.

Valory, Julia, Lucia, Talia, and Sage spent at week at Occidental College participating in this groundbreaking summit, “meeting, greeting, quizzing, challenging, conversing and dining with a unique faculty of mentors, including astronauts, artists, athletes, dinosaur-wranglers, economists, engineers, entrepreneurs, inventors, MacArthur geniuses, Nobel laureates, poets, programmers, public servants, Pulitzer-winning writers, scientists, scholars and tech titans.”

In addition to a robust list of seminars, lectures and presentations, our Marymount students participated in events such as a Hack-a-thon, a mini App-Building competition. Valory reported that her team successfully finished developing the App they chose to build, and won a prize for dedication to the project. Lucia was excited to report that she stepped out of her comfort zone, and presented an App idea to create with her team, rather than “stay back and go with someone else’s idea.”

Notable Quotes:
“Discovering who I am is a journey I am still on. Thanks to Adventures of the Mind, my horizons have been opened and I am encouraged to pursue my talents and figure out why I was put on this earth.”
-Valory Banashek ‘17

“I was convinced that I was not a math/science person… I was so wrong… a former Google employee, and current CEO of NunaHealth told her story of fixing HealthCare.gov…she was one of my favorite speakers and now I want to pursue computer science!”
– Lucia Kim ‘16

We would like to thank AOTM benefactor and Les Anges, Kathy L'Amour, for her support of Marymount students at this year's Summit.
