Marymount Interns and Mentors Celebrate Another Successful Summer

In the summer of 2010, the Marymount Internship Program began with just two students and one shared internship across the street at UCLA. Through the continued dedication of Head of School Jacqueline Landry and her team, the Marymount Internship Program has been evolving and growing toward her larger vision – that each Marymount girl graduate with “real world” experience. Five years later, the Summer 2014 program successfully matched 50 students with Mentors and Advanced Study opportunities at nearly 20 outposts across the greater Los Angeles area.

On Thursday, September 25, Interns and their Mentors gathered on the Marymount Dining Patio at twilight for the Annual Mentors Dinner to celebrate the completion of another successful year of this program.  Over dinner, several students shared reflections from their internships, speaking about their personal growth over the summer and how these lessons and experiences will help to shape them into the women they want to become.  Diana Bok ’16 used a metaphor of thunder and lightning to express how this program shaped her over the past summer.  She told the audience that when she was younger, she would count after seeing lighting to measure her proximity to any given storm.  Relating this to her experience in the internship program, she spoke about how her experience in UCLA Neurology was actually representative of “lighting” and that she is now “counting the moments” between being Diana Bok, Marymount Student and becoming Diana Bok, M.D.

Diana’s Mentor, Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl from the UCLA Department of Neurology, reflected on her experience working with both Diana and her other Marymount intern Paula Mendoza ’15, saying,   “When Marymount students come for the summer, they inject a new, fresh energy into the lab – it is always an incredibly positive experience.  Their presence is actually uplifting to my graduate and post-doctoral students. The interns see the lab in a very different and more meaningful light; the Marymount girls truly value being there.” Dr. Voskuhl continued by telling us the effect the Marymount interns had on her graduate and post-doctoral students, reinvigorating them to see and appreciate their work in a new way.  She concluded by saying, “I think the Marymount Interns bring more than they take. It’s a not just a great experience for them, it is also a great experience FOR US.”

We look forward to the continued growth of this program in the summer of 2015!
