Through their music, Marymount performers bring the holidays to those in need of some Christmas spirit

While most of us were busily completing our last bits of shopping to prepare for the holidays, a group of talented and thoughtful Marymount students were making their way to the Sharon Care Center, a hospital rehabilitation facility, to perform for patients who were unable to make it home for the holidays due to illness or injury.

Lauren Macievic ‘16 and Lucia Kim ‘16, the organizers, say that experiences with the infirmed inspired them to pursue this project. Lauren notes that while volunteering at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, patients would often express their joy whenever young musicians and singers took the time to perform at the hospital. Lucia also notes that she’d been seeking out ways to bring music to people who could not easily access live music due to physical impairments, and together, they were inspired to action.

The performance was so well received by the residents of the Sharon Care facility that Lauren and Lucia plan to organize monthly performances at hospitals and other, similar facilities around the Los Angeles area. Lucia notes, “I love that Marymount’s Service Program allows us to turn our ideas and hopes into reality!”

Lucia and Lauren are grateful to Dr. Billington and their fellow Marymount musicians and singers Norani Abilo ‘16, Ariel Adelman ‘15, Isabelle Hiedewohl ‘16, Kelli Staake ‘16, and Jessenia Zelaya ’15, who helped to make their idea a reality.
