Marymount Artists make waves with their creativity on campus and off!

The ’14-’15 academic year has been an amazing one so far for our Visual Arts community, with artists in all media enjoying incredible achievements in both local, state and national competitions/exhibitions.

Many of our Visual Artists placed highly in prestigious local and national art competitions such as the Robert Graham Memorial Art Competition, the ‘Expressions of Strength” Competition sponsored by the Commission for the Status of Women, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the Malibu Teen Film Festival and the Teen Faith Film Festival.

In the annual Robert Graham Memorial Art Competition, Lauren Gabourel ‘15, Kelly Kirch ‘15, Ellie Nolan ’15, Harine Park ‘15, Rebecca Casey ‘16, and Krystyna Maruszko ’17 were recognized for their images of spirituality.

Christine Beatty ‘15, Olivia Bowman ‘15, Lauren Gabourel ‘15 and Daisy Trout ‘15 were four of just 15 artists recognized for their submissions to the “Expressions of Strength” art contest; their work will be on display in City Hall through March.

Christine Beatty ’15, Lauren Gabourel ’15, Annika Garrett ’15, Reiley Johnson ‘15, Sophia Kim ‘15, Harine Park ‘15, Allegra Udell ’15, Anna Whittell ‘15, and Tiffany Cappellari ’16 received awards ranging from Honorable Mention to Silver and Gold Keys for their submissions in a variety of media to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.

As for our aspiring filmmakers, Paula Sison ’15 was invited to show her film, "The Pressure of Freddie Bear and the Ballpoint Pen,” at the Malibu Teen Film Festival and Laurel Wholihan ’16, was accepted into the Teen Faith Film Festival with her film,  “She Remembered.”

On campus, our artists have been similarly busy and prolific. The Marymount Chapter of the National Art Honor Society has been busy elevating the profile of our Visual Arts program; their most recent project was service-related and aptly titled the “Peace Curtain,” an installation inspired by famed artist Jim Hodges, which will be on display in Butler Hall after a peace commitment ceremony hosted on March 18th on Senior Lawn. Our gifted students have taken visual art on campus to a new level this year, creating innovative installations like the Marymount “Street Art” project, using new and creative spaces to express themselves.

As if all of this is not enough,  our incredible students will be wrapping up the semester by producing and editing the first ever Marymount Visual Arts Department documentary.  Way to go, Marymount Visual Artists!
