A Look Back on our 2nd Annual Global Community Week

Our second annual Global Community Week (Oct. 19-23), celebrated both the unique, diverse community that we are at Marymount, as well as our broader global community as a whole. Sponsored by The Marymount Chapter of Model United Nations (MUN), the week was spent bringing awareness to current global issues, finding unity in our various backgrounds through our international prayer service, and celebrating the birth of the United Nations (which turned 70 this year – Happy Birthday UN!).

When asked why Global Community Week was a new tradition brought to life last year, Dr. Menard (MUN Moderator and Social Studies teacher) said that the MUN students set a goal to “highlight and celebrate Marymount’s own international diversity in a way that would enhance our internal sense of community, while also raising Marymount’s external awareness of the world community.” Since then, there has been nothing short of constant support, excitement and reflection from both students and faculty leading up to, during, and at the conclusion of Global Community Week.

One of the most popular events as part of the week was the school-wide International Prayer Service, which gave a special focus to praying for social justice across society, and was delivered in the 31 different languages present at Marymount. Of the service, Global Community Week Coordinator, Grace Um ’16, said, “As a student coming from Korea, I was astonished by the diversity Marymount possessed.” She continued, “The Prayer for Social Justice was spoken in 31 different languages, something I would not have been able to witness in Korea, and there was a moment when I was able to internalize how America truly is a nation composed of diversity.”

Secretary General of Marymount MUN, Olivia Lipari ’16 also commented on the prayer service, saying,  “I distinctly remember hearing some girls after our International Prayer Service excitedly talk about how they did not know some their classmates were fluent in multiple languages.” The renewed sense of awareness, and the celebration of all nationalities and backgrounds that comprise our unique community is exactly what MUN hoped to achieve with Global Community Week.

Even though Global Community Week has a start and end date, our Marymount family proudly continues to embrace the different faces, talents, ethnicities, traditions and backgrounds that each individual student brings to our school. A special thanks to Dr. Menard and the entire Marymount MUN team for putting together another successful and inspirational event for our community!
