Marymount Honors International Day of the Girl

Today, October 11th, marks the International Day of the Girl, a United Nations (U.N.) led initiative that celebrates the power of girls, supports progress toward gender equality, and highlights the multitude of barriers girls face every day throughout the world.

Women make up over half of the human population, and there are over 1.1 billion young girls worldwide. Too often, girls across the world have their immense potential and dreams thwarted by discrimination, inequality, and violence. 62 million girls worldwide do not have the opportunity to receive an education, over 511,000,000 women are unable to read, and every year, 5 million girls are married before the age of 15. International Day of the Girl seeks to highlight these overwhelmingly disparate conditions and to increase awareness of gender inequality with regard to education, nutrition, legal rights, and medical care, as well as protection from discrimination, gender-based violence, and coerced child marriage. Girls are a powerful force. They can and will shape a sustainable and peaceful world, and they will help one another rise up.

At Marymount, we empower girls to become tomorrow's leaders, the shapers of a better future, and the agents of change for girls worldwide. It is our deeply held belief that educated girls create a stronger world. On this day of supporting global gender equality, we want to remind each of our girls how powerful and important they are. We encourage each member of our community to reach out to a girl in your life and tell her that she has the power to create a better future for all.
