Marymount High School is an independent, Catholic, all-girls school with the core purpose of educating and empowering young women to live lives of consequence as ethical leaders with a global perspective and an unshakable commitment to the common good.

History

In 1923, five young people opened the gate of Marymount School, little dreaming that they were to be the nucleus of a rapid and overwhelming progress."

Established in 1923 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM), Marymount, Los Angeles was founded at the request of the Most Reverend John Cantwell, the first Archbishop of Los Angeles. Directed by Mother Joseph Butler, five pioneering sisters of the RSHM first opened the doors of our original campus on 28th Street, adjacent to the University of Southern California. Enrollment steadily grew, and eight years later, Marymount moved to its present location on Sunset Boulevard. The sprawling new six-and- a-half acre campus featured beautiful Spanish Mission-style buildings, ample space for athletic and recreational facilities. The school’s distinctive buildings were declared a cultural historic monument in 1982.

Over the last 95 years, Marymount has continued to evolve scholastically, programmatically, financially and philanthropically as it has continued to bear the hallmarks of excellence and visionary planning. Though the decades have changed, Marymount's mission remains constant.

Throughout our history, Marymount has empowered young women to live lives that make a difference, promoting change and good for the world. Marymount has a long tradition of helping each girl find her own voice and believe in herself as an independent thinker with a deep commitment to serving others.
