Academic Support

"I believe the faith my teachers have in me helps me succeed."     Maddie D ‘11

Marymount strives to help its students excel in the classroom by providing academic support in a variety of subjects. Our faculty members are dedicated to working with students who need help in the areas of writing, visual arts, modern language and math.

Writing Center
The Writing Center provides students with the opportunity to work with English department faculty and exceptional peer tutors one-on-one to improve their writing skills. Tutors can provide assistance in shaping writing assignments from the pre-writing and drafting stages to the final editing and polishing. In addition, if a student needs practice with punctuation and/or grammar, they can find help in the Writing Center, located in H-9.  Students who wish to meet with a tutor may simply drop-in during Center hours; students can also arrange an appointment with their English teacher at any time.

  • The Writing Center is open every day at lunch and Tuesday and Thursday at Preps.

Visual Arts Lab
Students are welcome to get extra help with their art projects during Visual Art Labs in Butler Hall.  Labs are available during the week at the following times:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at Lunch
  • Tuesday and Thursdays at PREPS

Modern Language Lab
If a student feels she is falling behind or needs some extra help, Marymount offers tutoring during our French and Spanish labs.  Lab time may be used by students to ask specific questions about their homework, quizzes, tests or anything else that might pertain to and enhance student success in French or Spanish. Students are required to sign in. Lists of student attendance are sent to all grade level counselors and the Dean of Studies on a quarterly basis. Lab time can be used to correct quizzes or tests under the supervision of the lab teacher. The following information pertains to the lab schedule:

  • Modern Language Labs are offered twice per week each for Spanish I, Spanish II and all levels of French.
  • French Labs (all levels) and Spanish I Labs are held on Monday and Thursday during lunch in Butler 312 with Madame or Sra. Abensour.
  • Spanish II & III Labs are held on Monday and Thursday, during lunch, in Butler 300 with Sra. Valenzuela.
  • Teachers are available at most Tuesday PREPS and Thursday PREPS for help or questions as well. Please check with each individual teacher.

Math Labs
The Math Department offers Math Lab help sessions at lunch for all of the courses within the math curriculum. Students can use these Math Labs in any way they find useful. Many students use them to review work in preparation for tests and quizzes, to complete assignments, or to get help with concepts missed during an absence. On student evaluations, many students commented that they found the labs to be very beneficial, especially when they used them regularly.

Hot Math Link
Marymount student may access Hot Math which offers step-by-step solutions to every odd problem in the Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and all Calculus class textbooks.  Students receive a hint to solve the problem and, may then, either solve the problem or ask for the next hint.  An On-line Tutor is also available on the Hot Math website, as is a Chat Room, where two students, working on the same problem, may exchange ideas to solve the problem.
