Frosh/ Soph Lakewood Tournament 10.16.21

The Marymount Fr/So team traveled to Lakewood for the final event of the year, the Lakewood HS F/S Tourney.  This was essentially the “playoffs” for the Sailors, as they wrapped up their season.
Marymount found itself facing St Anthony HS, Cabrillo HS (Long Beach), and, a traditional “volleyball school”, Fountain Valley HS.  The Sailors were prepped and ready.  They took care of St Anthony, 25-11 and 25-17 (the 17 points here, was the most scored against the Marymount squad all day).  Logan D.'25 and Ryan G.’s '25 hitting was key, as was Kate W.’s '24 setting.
Next up was Cabrillo HS.  They were over matched; Marymount dispatched them, 25-13 and 25-10.   By winning their pool, this put Marymount into the playoff rounds as the #2 seed.
The first playoff opponent was Notre Dame Academy (a fellow, Mission league team).  The Sailors has defeated NDA twice in league.  NDA lost again 25-7.
That win put Marymount up against Long Beach Poly in the Round of 8.  That “match” began fairly even; LB Poly had some tall hitters. But Marymount got their serving going and that proved to be a big factor in that win (25-14).
Now things got very fun and interesting.  The next opponent (for the Semi Finals), was Los Alamitos HS. Los Al’ had beaten our Sailors in the Semi’s of the Dave Moh’s tourney, a few weeks ago.  Once again, their tough serving proved to be a problem for Los Al, and the Sailors  began to pass and defend better. That made the difference as Marymount won that set, 25-14.  Thus, the Fr/So found themselves in their first finals contest of the season.
They were to face Vista Murrieta HS in this Tourney Final and they responded well.  Vista M. has beaten Marymount back in August, in a regular match.  Vista M. struggled to pass the Sailors’ serves and compounded that problem with a bunch of attacking errors.  Marymount went on to win the set, and the whole tournament, 25-16.
What a great way to wrap up their season.  They dominated “the playoffs.”  Each and every girl, in one way or another (lots of diverse contributions), made a difference on the day. Congratulations to our Frosh/ Soph Sailors! GREAT JOB!
