A Recognition of Excellence

Surrounded by family, faculty, and staff, members of the Class of 2026 were welcomed into the Cum Laude Society—a distinction reserved for a small subset of students who have demonstrated the highest level of academic excellence.
With 382 chapters spanning the United States and countries including the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Canada, England, France, and Spain, membership reflects not only individual achievement, but the strength of the academic program they represent.

Head of School Dr. Fadia Hefni Desmond ’90 opened the evening in prayer, grounding the moment in gratitude. “Only you know the true sacrifice and effort expended by our students,” she shared, acknowledging both the discipline required to reach this milestone and the families and educators who made it possible. Her remarks set the tone for a celebration that recognized not just achievement, but the shared investment behind it.

That sense of purpose carried forward as Academic Dean Julie Whittell reflected on the mission of the Society, describing it as “a fellowship of scholars whose purpose is to recognize excellence in academic work,” while also emphasizing the integrity and responsibility expected of its members. Founded in 1906, the organization has long held that academic distinction is inseparable from a commitment to understanding and contributing to the world beyond the classroom—an impact reflected in the roughly 4,000 students inducted worldwide each year.

At Marymount, those ideals feel less like an added expectation and more like a natural extension of the student experience. Academic excellence is not treated as an endpoint, but as part of a larger formation—one that asks students to pair intellectual strength with awareness, responsibility, and care for others.

That expectation came into sharper focus as inductees stood to receive the Charge of the Society and hear its guiding motto: Arete, Dike, Time—Excellence, Justice, Honor. In that moment, the recognition shifted subtly, from a reflection of what these students have accomplished to a call forward. As they were reminded, membership carries with it “a responsibility to make continuing contributions to the ongoing search for greater understanding of humanity and society.”

One by one, inductees stepped forward to receive their pins and certificates, marking a milestone shaped by years of steady effort—late nights, sustained focus, and a willingness to push beyond what was required. The pride in the room was unmistakable, shared not only by the students, but by everyone who had supported them along the way.

The evening also included the induction of Dr. Desmond as an honorary member of Marymount’s Cum Laude chapter, recognizing her leadership and commitment to academic excellence within the community.

As the ceremony came to a close, her final blessing offered a fitting reflection—one that looked less at what has been achieved and more toward what lies ahead: that these students continue to lead with “wisdom, compassion, and integrity” in all they do.
