Playbill, Marymount's 2010 edition of Sunset Magazine, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This is the third time that Marymount's literary and art magazine has been singled out by the judges for this award in the last four years. Demetra Hufnagel, a freshman at Yale, and Kathryn Wilson, a freshman at NYU, were Co-Editors-in-Chief and the Faculty Advisor for Sunset is Ms. Debra Miller, who has served in that capacity for four years. Ms. Miller is "amazed by each new staff's willingness to constantly push the limits of their creativity ... and not rest on the laurels of the previous year."
Work on the 2011 edition, titled Freudian Slip, has already begun under the able leadership of Co-Editors, Sophia J. '11 and Emma S. '11, both of whom have been involved with Sunset for three years. The Visual Media Editor is Anna Leah C. '11 who is in her second year of involvement withthe publication. The staff consists of eleven students, including four freshmen. The girls solicit content for the magazine from the entire population of the school and meet twice each week during Preps. Submissions are read anonymously and the staff selects those that are noteworthy for inclusion in the magazine.
One of the objectives of the editors this year was to fastidiously incorporate the guidelines and suggestions of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in the production of Freudian Slip. With this in mind, they have been actively soliciting talent within the Marymount community to produce work for the new magazine. They are very mindful of their desire to produce a magazine that truly represents the "Marymount spirit" as they balance the recommendations from Columbia. The CSPA is a program of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University that has been evaluating student magazines in an annual process since 1925.
The magazine is produced using InDesign and the editors quickly note that Sister Margaret McKenna is an indispensible force in learning to utilize both InDesign and Photoshop. The magazine will be printed and released prior to Spring Break on March 24. The Sunset staff hosts a launch party to introduce their work to the community and many submissions are read aloud by their authors. The dedication and effort put forth by these students is amazing and their work is wonderful. Click here to view the PDF version of last year's award-winning magazine.
