The Anchor and Sunset Receive Gold Ratings From Columbia University

Two Marymount student-run publications, The Anchor and Sunset magazine, received prestigious Gold Medalist Critiques from Columbia University’s Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for their 2017-18 academic year entries.
The Anchor is Marymount’s student online newspaper that features student journalism about the school and the greater Los Angeles community, while the printed Sunset magazine showcases students’ creative writing, design, photography, and art.

“One of the most impressive elements about Sunset is that it truly is all student work,” said Laura Cowan, English teacher and Sunset faculty advisor. “Girls from every grade level submitted artwork, prose, and/or poetry on their own accord. Two girls on the Sunset staff met with writers for revisions and fully designed the magazine’s layout. There isn't a single thing in the magazine that a student didn't do!”

Last year, sixteen students staffed Sunset, with each girl contributing at least one piece of work to the magazine. An additional sixteen pieces were submitted by students not on the staff.

The Anchor, published quarterly online, is staffed by over 70 students, including 10 to 12 Editorial Board members.

"I'm excited and humbled to receive a Gold Medal from CSPA," said Samantha Hazell-O'Brien, Marymount's Director of Diversity and Inclusion, English teacher, and The Anchor's faculty advisor. "It's an honor for CSPA to recognize The Anchor staff and Editorial Board's enthusiasm to engage in journalistic writing!"

The CSPA is Columbia’s international student press association that unites student journalists and faculty advisers through conferences, idea exchanges, textbooks, critiques, and award programs. Each year, student newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and online media are invited to submit issues or hyperlinks for Medalist Critiques.

Experienced judges conduct Critiques based on standards and best practices for student media developed by the CSPA. Judges write out comments and make constructive suggestions for building on current strengths and correcting deficiencies. Critiques are scored and awarded on
three levels: bronze, silver, or gold.
