Sailors Send Love (and Diapers) to Texas in an All-School Hurricane Harvey Diaper Drive

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Marymount’s Student Service Board announced the start of an all-school Hurricane Harvey Diaper Drive to help the victims of the recent, unprecedented storm that devastated Texas.
In consonance with the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary’s (RSHM) commitment to place ourselves and our resources at the service of those most in need of justice, especially women and children, the Student Service Board is asking fellow Sailors and their families to donate diapers and related items to be sent to the Texas Diaper Bank, a San Antonio, Texas-based coalition of churches that work to close the diaper gap and help individuals in crisis.

Senior Megan R., a Student Service Board member, is spearheading the drive. She was inspired while watching the news with her mother and felt particularly moved by the images and stories of women and children struggling in Harvey’s wake.

“It was really upsetting, so I felt our school should do something,” Megan said. “Anything helps.”

One-hundred percent of donations will go to disaster relief efforts along the Texas coast. The Texas Diaper Bank will distribute donations to shelters in affected areas where families face long-term displacement.

“This is a fast-moving project, and we only have a certain number of days to collect the donations,” said Megan, who noted Marymount will begin the collection immediately through Monday, Sept. 11, which coincides with the U.S. National Day of Service.

The Texas Diaper Bank specifically needs the following items (for a complete list of current needs, please see the Texas Diaper Bank’s Hurricane Harvey Fact Sheet:
  • Any brand and any size baby diapers, pull-ups, adult diapers, formula and wipes.
  • Larger-sized diapers: sizes 4, 5 and 6
  • Pull-ups: sizes 2T to 5T
  • Adult diapers: sizes large and extra-large
  • Bed pads
  • Wipes
In addition to the above-listed toiletries, the Student Service Board will collect monetary donations to fund the supplies’ shipping costs. To learn more about the Texas Diaper Bank, click HERE.

As always, our Sailors’ continued commitment to justice and the tenants of RSHM values leave us in awe – and the world a better place.
