Stanford's Dr. Sarah Billington Presents Her Research to Our Students

Ann J. '19
On Friday, November 3, Marymount had the honor to welcome Dr. Sarah Billington, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, to speak about her research, her love for engineering, and her career in making interdisciplinary connections between different fields of engineering.
From high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composite materials to polymeric composites with closed loop life-cycles, Dr. Billington’s presentation demonstrated the joy of scientific research and its contribution to society's well-being. Discussing the challenges that females face in the STEAM field today, she pointed out the importance of leadership and collaboration. Her witticisms and humor lightened the entire room and inspired us to step forward and take on the lead.

After her awe-inspiring presentation, Dr. Billington stepped into our AP Physics classroom, which spontaneously sparked an engaging and deep conversation about innovative ideas on building structures and smart indoor environments. Everyone was truly inspired by Professor Billington’s wisdom, passion and kindness. We are ready to begin our exploration as curious and passionate engineers!
