Celebrating Sailor Sisterhood at The Annual Capping & Pinning Ceremony

On Monday, October 30, the Marymount community gathered together on Senior Lawn, for our annual Capping & Pinning Ceremony. This beloved tradition celebrates the unity of Sailor Sisterhood across all grades and students. Freshmen are officially welcomed as the newest Sailors, while Sophomores are congratulated in their last year before becoming upperclassmen.
After delivering a special prayer, Head of School Jacqueline L. Landry noted that the sailor cap is an important symbol for Marymount women as they navigate through their high-school careers and beyond. Ms. Landry pointed to Scripture’s many allusions to the sea, which mirrors the fluctuating chaos and calm of life.

“The seas of life are not lost on you,” Ms. Landry said. “Your experiences matter; we are Sailor Strong no matter how rough life gets, and we, like Jesus, are able to calm the storm by recognizing what is truly important in life: our core essence that we are called to live every day.”

Longtime Marymount English teacher Margaret Brady ‘89 also addressed the students. Ms. Brady fondly recalled the Capping & Pinning ceremonies during her own time as a Marymount student and noted its lasting celebration of sisterhood.

“There are some traditions that continue not just because they’ve been done many times before, but because they have meanings that go deeper than mere repetition,” Ms. Brady said. “These traditions are the ones that give purpose to our community and celebrate the core values that makes the Sailor Sisterhood special.

“We all value and accept each other because we are part of the same family – a family that is anchored in faith and that respects all members,” Ms. Brady said.

The ceremony concluded with Freshmen happily tossing their caps to the sky – marking the first of lifelong memories of the enduring power of sisterhood.
