Marymount Unveils Digital Resource Center, Our Newly-Transformed Library

On Wednesday, Jan. 24, Marymount High School unveiled its newly-transformed library, now the Digital Resource Center (DRC), in ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Head of School Jacqueline L. Landry.  The DRC opens to students on Monday, Jan. 29.
“It’s amazing when faculty, philanthropic donors and trustees converge with a shared vision -that’s when magic and transformation happens,” said Ms. Landry, who thanked the gathering of donors, faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees. “We stand on the shoulders of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, who, before ‘STEAM’ and ‘STEM’ were even acronyms, were educating women in science and math.”

Ms. Landry acknowledged STEAM fields historic dearth of women, and said the DRC was part of Marymount’s larger goal of preparing Sailors to answer the call for more innovative and curious women in male-dominated industries.

The DRC was designed by architect Jessica Peat from Wagner Architecture Group, Inc. in collaboration with Board of Trustees member Geoffrey Emery. The building, originally constructed in 1983, provides space for independent and collaborative learning where students can study and work in large and small groups.

The redesign includes a cutting-edge Engineering and Design Space (EDS), in which students can access 3D printers, laser cutters, a large-format printer, sewing machines, a variety of power tools and more. The EDS will foster intellectual curiosity, support independent learning and encourage cross-disciplinary thinking.

Former Marymount trustee Monsignor Torgerson, current pastor of St. Monica Catholic Church, noted our school’s history of dedication to women’s education and offered gratitude and a blessing that the DRC will help Sailors carry forth the RHSM legacy.

“As we come to this new Digital Resource Center, and as students pursue the arts and sciences, may we always be docile to the wisdom of Your word,” Monsignor said.  “Grant that, imbued with true learning, we will strive to create a more beautiful world.”

On behalf of Marymount’s Board of Trustees, Secretary Caitlin Villante thanked Ms. Landry, faculty and staff for their efforts and presented Geoffrey Emery with an honorary hardhat for his detailed contributions to the building’s development.

“This evening marks the culmination of an idea that started years ago about a dynamic and novel facility that would serve as a resource for research and exploration that would inspire creativity and design, thinking and innovation,” said Ms. Villante, who also serves as Chair of Marymount’s Advancement Committee. “It has been an honor and privilege to witness this dream becoming a reality.”

The evening ended with a ribbon-cutting dedication and toast that honored Marymount students of the past, present and future, all of whom are and will be bonded by our RHSM mission that all may have life and have it to the full.
