Varsity Water Polo Crowned the CIF-SS Champions!

With over nineteen years in the making, the Marymount Water Polo team has ended their winter season as the CIF-SS Champions!
In its nineteen-year history, the Water Polo program at Marymount has built opportunities for girls slowly and sequentially, taking athletes from learning how to swim and score a goal, to now, taking the title of CIF Southern Section Champions. The young women who make up this program embody what it means to be a Marymount girl: they are women full of dedication and tenacity who with hard work, achieve the highest of goals.

The Varsity team has had a season worthy of a storybook finish: after finishing third in the Mission League, the team - for the first time in Marymount Water Polo history - advanced to CIF-SS playoffs! In the first round, Marymount dominated Sierra Vista winning 20-2. Following that win, our girls were back on the road traveling to their quarterfinal opponent, Mark Keppel, who they once again, defeated with a score of 12-4. The Sailors reached uncharted territory in the semi-final CIF-SS game against Villanova Prep.

In the nail-biting semi-final game, Marymount maintained the lead for the first half. Villanova tied it up and took the lead 4-3 in the third quarter. With only seconds remaining in the fourth, the Sailors tied at 4-4 forcing the game into overtime. After the first overtime period, the game remained tied. It wasn't until halfway through the second overtime period that Marymount scored the game-winning goal sending the Sailors into the CIF-SS Finals where they finished with an impressive 8-2 win over Los Amigos High School.

So here we are at the culmination of an unforgettable season. Marymount history was made, records were broken, and our Varsity Water Polo team walked away crowned the 2017-2018 CIF-SS Champions. A very big “Congratulations” to our Sailor Strong athletes!
