Inspiring Boldness: Colonel Kimberly Colloton

The Inspiring Boldness Speaker Series continued on Friday, March 7th with Colonel Kimberly Colloton, 60th Commander of the LA District of The Army Corps of Engineers. Colonel Colloton is the first woman to hold this role for the district, and is in command of a billion dollar budget as well as more than 700 employees in four states in the southwestern United States.

As the first woman to fill the commander role, Colonel Colloton is committed to helping ensure that the labor force of the Army Corps of Engineers reflects the population at large. She noted that connecting with young women, bringing them into STEM careers was a big priority in her mind. As she looked out at the audience of young women, she said, “Looking at all of you, it seems like the future of women in leadership roles is bright.”

Learning about the undeniable success in what might be considered a man’s world, the rapt audience asked Colonel Colloton several questions, primarily about how to make sure one’s choices and plans are the right ones in life.  Her advice was sage, invoking the old military adage that no plan can survive an execution. The colonel noted, “Set long term goals, and then find smaller goals to reach along the way. But, be aware that things change, people change, be prepared to evolve as you go.  While you are in charge of shaping your destiny, be ready for the world and your life to change in unexpected ways.”

Colonel Colloton was also thoughtful about the particular set of issues women face in the workforce. “Do not take ‘No’ for an answer, be good at what you do, work harder than those around you, and opportunities will open up for you. You may not always be the best, but your dedication will shine through.”   The colonel concluded with “Be honest with yourself; there may be times in your life when you are unable to take on additional work- perhaps to go back to school or to start a family. Save yourself from the guilt: you will be far happier and more successful when you can be honest with yourself, and not take on more than is manageable at any given time.”

A very special 'Thank You' to Dr. Julia Phillps for bringing Colonel Colloton to the Inspiring Boldness Speaker Series.
