Students Dig Into the True Meaning of Equality, #IDG2014

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution to declare October 11th as the “International Day of the Girl Child” in order to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

This year, in anticipation of the 2014 “International Day of the Girl” (#IDG2014) the Marymount community pledged to celebrate “Girl Power” in all facets of school life. Throughout the month of October, faculty, students and administrators alike have been empowered and encouraged to have thoughtful discussions about this all-important, globally recognized movement.

We kicked off the month by asking our students, “What does GIRL POWER mean to you??”  Inspired by their answers and curious to dig deeper, we morphed the conversation to the question of how, as a community privileged to live in and to be educated in the United States, on the west side of Los Angeles, we could possibly need an “International Day of the Girl” in OUR lives. Ideas about the gender wage gap, female representation in leadership positions, maternity leave policies and more have been discussed in depth both inside the classroom and out, creating a meaningful dialogue around not only “International Day of the Girl,” but also, what it really means to be a girl in this world, today and in the future.

As the month of October progresses, Marymount students will be thinking more about issues of gender inequality around the world as well as the global impact of this inequality. In their Theology classes, students will be asked to give close analysis of the documentary, “Girl Rising,” considering in particular the long-term effects that denying girls education has had on entire cultures. The AP US History students have been participating in Socratic Dialogue about the history and evolution of the Women’s Rights movement, and just how far we still have to go in order to achieve a truly level playing field, right here at home in the United States.

Over the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing more updates on these enriching discussions across our campus and continuing to teach the value that each one of our girls has the power to be a force of good for each other, for girls everywhere and for the world.
