Marymount artists shine at the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Competition

Last week, Scholastic, Inc. announced their Art and Writing Awards for 2015, and once again, many of Marymount’s artists were honored. Tiffany Cappellari ‘16 earned a Gold Key for Painting, while Lauren Gabourel ‘15 and Harine Park ‘15 took home Silver Keys for Drawing and Digital Art, respectively. In addition to our Key Award recipients, six young artists received Honorable Mentions for their portfolios and individual pieces.

Tiffany, Lauren and Harine, along with the Honorable Mention recipients - seniors Christine Beatty, Annika Garrett, Reiley Johnson, Sophia Kim, Allegra Udell, and Anna Whittell - competed in a pool of nearly 260,000 submissions from young artists throughout the country. Their artwork was judged by leaders in the art world, who considered ‘originality, technical skill, and burgeoning personal voice and vision’ when determining winners.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have recognized young artists, many of whom have gone on to excellence in their fields, such as Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, Robert Redford and Richard Linklater, to name a few.

At Marymount, participation in the Arts is considered integral to the development of the whole person. Students are encouraged to pursue the Arts, and through our curriculum, are exposed to a variety of media, ranging from traditional disciplines like drawing/painting all the way up to 3D design, street art installations, and graphic design. Marymount’s rigorous academic program is augmented by the Arts curriculum by drawing out the unique perspective and self-expression in each girl.
