Hyewon L., ‘17 Selected For National College Match

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Hyewon L., ’17, has been selected from thousands of applicants as a QuestBridge Scholar this year. The QuestBridge National College Match program, which partners with top-tier universities and colleges to provide the highest level of education to the nation’s most promising students, saw the same level of hard work, grit, intelligence and humor that Hyewon has shown at Marymount each day. Chosen from a competitive pool of nearly 15,000 applicants, Hyewon will attend the University of Pennsylvania after being admitted as an Early Decision applicant this past fall.

Since 1994, Questbridge has helped highly-qualified, exceptional students gain access to top-tier colleges and universities nationwide. By providing students with full scholarships to the nation’s most prestigious schools, Questbridge helps them reach their fullest potential.

When Hyewon and her College Counselor, Marty O’Connell, first discussed the possibility of applying for the QuestBridge Scholarship, they knew she would need to put in extra work to plan and execute her college applications, given the added rigorous application process for the scholarship. She spent the summer writing her applications and essays, showing her characteristic grit and always staying positive. When, after all her hard work, she finally received the news that she’d received the scholarship, she almost couldn’t believe it. Hyewon says, “I was walking down the entryway to Marymount and saw the results on my phone. I had to look at it over and over again because I couldn't grasp what had just happened before my eyes.”

When asked how she feels the Scholarship will help her in her college career, Hyewon reflected that, “it will definitely allow me to be more confident in my college career because I will know that I am a part of a national community of students who can provide each other with welcoming support.” She’s also very much looking forward to joining the University of Pennsylvania community; she “can’t wait to meet new people and experience college life in Philadelphia!”

Overall, her experience with connecting to the Questbridge community and applying for the scholarship was extremely positive. She said, “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to apply for the QuestBridge scholarship and I hope I can encourage many others to take the chance as well.”

We could not be more proud of Hyewon’s accomplishments, and are thrilled and excited as she looks forward to the next chapter of her academic career.
