Sailor Service Day Brings Gratitude to the Class of 2022

On Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Class of 2022 split into groups to volunteer at four local organizations for our annual Freshman Service Day.
As a means to enact ethical leadership through action, each year, Freshmen are introduced to several non-profit groups that support varied populations across the greater Los Angeles area. This day marks the beginning of their four years of service projects, self-reflection, and methods to tackle social injustices so that students become imbued with a sense that they are part of something bigger than themselves. This year, students visited:
  • Ahead with Horses – an organization which integrates horses with developmental therapy, education, and recreation for disabled, disadvantaged, and special needs children.
  • A Place Called Home (APCH) – a recreation center that offers educational programs, counseling, mentorship, and after-school activities to South Central children ages eight to 21 years-old.
  • The Jeffrey Foundation – a service that improves the quality of life for special needs children and their families through the development of community-based therapeutic, recreational, educational, and social programs.
  • The Midnight Mission – a Skid Row center that provides food and crisis intervention services to homeless persons, serving between 200 and 600 meals per day with fresh food donated by local businesses such as Starbucks Corp., Costco Wholesale Corp., and La Brea Bakery.

Visiting The Midnight Mission with students, the Marketing and Communications Department was able to get an inside view into students experiences. Simone M. ’22, who visited Midnight Mission, said: “The experience I had at The Midnight Mission was not only a fun bonding time with friends and teachers, but also a way to reach out to my community and those in need.”

Many students who visited this organization said it was an eye-opening experience that made them grateful for what they have.

“Today, I learned that I am very lucky in many ways,” said Vittoria S. “This experience reminded me to appreciate everything and everyone I have in my life.”

After sorting donated food and preparing for the lunch service, the girls served lunch to men and women that rely on The Midnight Mission.

I learned how much preparation goes into just one day of feeding people and how nice the people here are,” said Caroline C.
