Varsity Soccer Overview of the 2018-19 Season

It was a very positive season for the Sailors, although with a bittersweet ending, having tied for third place in Mission League and then having lost the tie-breaker game to determine which team would advance to playoffs. Marymount last competed in Mission League during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons. At that time the Sailors accomplished 1 tie in 2 years. The expectation for this season was to face similar struggles in the tough Mission League.

Instead, the Sailors surprised everyone, proving extremely competitive and ending the season with a 2-4-2 record in League (a total of 8 points) and a 6-9-2 overall record. The Sailors won their first Mission League game and were very competitive in every game, despite having lost 7-8 starters from last year, due to graduation, injuries and Academy.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
The Sailors entered only one tournament this season, the South Torrance Tournament. They did really well in the first round, winning both games, including perennial strong program Peninsula High and advancing to the top 8 in the tournament. The Sailors ended the tournament with a respectable 7th place out of 32 teams.

STANDOUT MOMENTS
The most exciting moment of the season was probably the first win in Mission league, with a 1-0 result in pouring rain at Notre Dame Sherman Oaks. The winning goal was scored by Ava P.H. Other standout moments were the 2-0 win at home vs. Chaminade and the 1-0 win at home vs. Agoura, with a goal by Mia R. in the final moments of the game.

FUTURE PREDICTIONS
Now that the Sailors knows they can compete at this level, Coach Manu is confident they can repeat a similar season next year and make that playoff spot. Moving forward, this will be the goal for the Sailors.
