  • SWIM ROCKS FINALS!

    Junior Varsity:

The Marymount High School Junior Varsity swim team finished an impressive 2nd in the recent Sunshine League Championships held at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.  The 200 Medley Relay "A" team of Caitlin Garcia, Nina Regenstreif, Anna Whittell, and Kendal Currie kicked things off with a gold medal winning performance.  The MHS "B" team of Helya Samimi, Lauren Vellonakis, Chloe Zarco, and Juliette Ulrich also took home a medal by finishing in third place.  The Marymount momentum continued into the next event as Meghan McMcahon, Garcia, and Kara Duncan touched 5th, 6th, and 9th respectively in the 200 Freestyle.  It should also be noted that sophomore Kristen Lee chopped ten seconds off her best time in the preliminaries and just missed placing in the Top 12.

Whittell (2nd), Katie Shields (10th), and Chloe Zarco (12th) all swam personal best times in the 100 IM as the Sailors established themselves as the team to beat going into the always entertaining 50 Freestyle.  In a perfectly executed race, Tori Lowell led from start to finish to win gold while Currie (3rd), Chelsea Otto (6th), and Regenstreif (8th) all swam well to add valuable points to the team's total.

After four more swimmers scored in the 50 Butterfly (Whittel, Shields, Zarco and sophomore Hyun Shin), Lowell once again proved that she was the fastest JV swimmer at the meet by breaking the league and high school records in the 100 Freestyle.  She was supported by Currie (4th), Otto (8th) and McMahon (9th) -- all in personal best times.  After placing two teams in the finals of the 200 Freestyle Relay (2nd and 6th), Garcia broke the Marymount High School in the 50 Backstroke in a very fast 34.07.  Samimi was right behind in third place with a personal best time of 35.23.  Regenstreif and Vellonakis touched 6th and 8th, respectively, in the 50 Breaststroke while freshman Raquel Freeman finished just outside the points with a respectable 15th place.

In the final event of the Junior Varsity meet -- the 400 Free Relay -- another MHS was broken.  The team of Otto, Garcia, Currie, and Lowell swam to silver in a time of 4:21.29, a time that would have placed them 4th at the Varsity level.  The "B" team of Duncan, Ulrich, Samimi, and McMahon closed out the competition by finishing 5th.

Overall, it was a great day for the Sailors as 75 personal best times, 5 high school, and 3 league records were established at the two day competition.  One other highlight should be mentioned: Marymount was the only school in the league that had no individual or relay disqualifications.  The team displayed tremendous focus, sportsmanship, and pride throughout the meet.  Coaches Tom Iannone and Abby Blank could not have asked for more.  Congratulations!
  • VS. Notre Dame Academy 94-48

The Marymount High School Junior Varsity swim team ended their successful Spring on a winning note by defeating Notre Dame Academy.  Twelve personal best times were set: Lauren Higgins (200 Free, 100 Free), Anna Whittell (100 IM, 50 Fly), Lauren Vellonakis (50 Free), Helya Samimi (50 Free), Chloe Zarco (50 Fly), Caitlin Garcia (50 Fly), Kara Duncan (100 Free), Raquel Freeman (100 Free, 50 Back), and Hyun Shin (50 Back).  The team will travel to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center on Tuesday (5/1) for the preliminaries of the Sunshine League Championships where they are in contention to win the biggest meet of the 2012 season.  Good Luck Sailors!
  • VS. Marlborough High School 60-82

Caitlin Garcia, Lauren Vellonakis, Anna Whittell, and Kendal Currie kicked off a very fast Junior Varsity competition by posting a league-leading time in the 200 Medley Relay as the MHS team lost in their last away meet of the season.  Other personal best times were turned in by Megan McMahon (200 Free), Katie Shields (100 IM), Whittell (50 Fly), Chloe Zarco (50 Fly), Currie (100 Free), Chelsea Otto (100 Free), and Garcia (50 Back).  Marymount will complete their dual meet season tomorrow (4/26/12) against visiting Notre Dame Academy.
